The Artful Plan: Intentional Garden Design Through Curation

(This is part 3 of a 3-part series – a Spring Manifesto – to help you set your intention, seek inspiration, and begin the curation process to create a holistic and restorative garden space. Read Part 1 here and Part 2 there.)

If you are like me, and I trust that we’re birds of a feather, you love your pretty self a plan – a purpose and reason that guides how you’ll spend your time and money.

You’ve set your intention. You’ve sought out inspiration. Now, you’re ready to create a garden space to indulge yourself without judgment.

You’re being intentional in your process, reaching out to reap true, heartfelt transformation. There is just one step left – curating the elements you’ll add to your restorative garden space. But how do you know exactly what to add?

We’ll start with one core question to guide us through the curation of your space.

What is essential?

Healing

adjective

  1. curing or curative; prescribed or helping to heal.
  2. growing sound; getting well; mending.

I love the idea of curation. The word “cure” comes from the Latin root Cura – which means care or attention. Just as you seek the cure for an illness, the way you curate your environment can have incredible healing effects. The science says so, and more importantly, your heart says so when you enter a space unique to your needs and desires.

It’s time to move past theory and into the practical application of restorative garden design. Which means…

It’s discovery time! Grab a pen, paper, and your muck boots. Let’s do some digging!

  • Your space has a natural genius that dwells inherently. What are you drawn to or “get” from the space? Let your intuition tap into it. Listen.
  • Study your environment and look for the practicalities of windy, sunny, wet or settling spots.
  • How do you want to signal to yourself that you have arrived in your special place of healing? Consider the arrival and departure shifts of energy that flow through a space.
  • What is the purpose of this outdoor living space in your life? What elements will help speak to this purpose and underscore the vital importance this connection holds for you?

With every choice you make, ask yourself:

Am I taking care of the precious self? The Red Bird?

What cure am I longing for? What feeling of transformation am I determined to experience?

Infuse your garden space with purposeful elements that point back to the essence you are striving to create.

It needs to make sense to you and your style and have meaning that restores you. Follow this prescription to make your intentional plan. It will become your touchstone and help you filter out all the fluff and stuff.
